Yolu know that didjeridu crafting has spread all over Australia, but many are surprised to learn that the instrument is also being made in different forms out of different materials all over the world. All feel to some extent proprietary about the instrument. Some take the extreme view that the didjeridu belongs only to the Yolu and other neighbouring groups, and it is wrong for any others to make it and earn money from selling it. Others are a bit more accepting, but never fully granting the didjeridu status as a worldwide musical instrument detached from traditional ownership.

But many of these same people still feel that if a person is to learn to play, that they should learn to play correctly - in the Yolu style. This opinion was expressed by Milkayu Munugurr and younger men like Yarru Gondarra and Gurraramawuy Munyarryun. This view states that outsiders should learn Yolu techniques, but not entire Yolu songs. People can then make up their own songs from a better foundation in the traditional origins of the instrument and integrate Yolu techniques into other styles of music. Young Yolu men and boys do improvise for fun, unlike their elders. The end result could be similar to the mixing of styles Djalu' encourages.

The ancestor is known to the Gumatj clan as Ganbulapula, although he had more identities as he travelled across different Yirritja clans' lands, all the way from Gupapuyu clan country in the far west of the Yolu cultural bloc, where he began his travels as Murayana.

Every person is responsible for learning and maintaining their own clan's business, but they also have an important role looking after their mother clan's business. The yothu is the caretaker or manager of his or her yindi's land, ceremonies, paintings, etc. In many Yolu languages this caretaker is called djugaya. The djugaya is consulted about use of his or her mother's clan's land and resources, and must be satisfied with the performance of its ceremonies. Yothu-Yindi is an extremely important concept that maintains the practice of Yolu culture, thanks to an ongoing system of checks and balances and cooperation between the two moieties.

Like everything else in the universe, yidaki can be Dhuwa or Yirritja. There is not just one type of didjeridu known as the yidaki with one story behind it. There are many stories about the origins and uses of the yidaki among the Yolu. Some are about everyday usage that are common to both moieties. Some are about very specific sacred types of yidaki that belong to certain clans and moieties. There are several specific types of yidaki that are Dhuwa, and several that are Yirritja. On the other hand, as Marrakulu clan, Dhuwa moiety man Wukun Wanambi pointed out, all the Ga[ayka trees (a totem of his clan) that most yidaki are made from are Dhuwa, so perhaps all of these yidaki are Dhuwa! Wukun did however proceed to say that there are appropriate sounds for different clan's music.

He was a Djapu man who was speaking about his own totem, the shark. But these dimensions, he said, are relevant to all Yolu education.

Buku-Larrgay Mulka, the art centre in the Aboriginal township of Yirrkala, and producers of this website. In addition to yidaki, many other crafts are available. Yolu paint their sacred designs on sheets of bark and large hollow log coffins. Woven crafts, carvings, jewelry and prints are also available. Buku-Larrgay Mulka also houses a large museum of works dating back to the 1960's, including the significant Yirrkala Church Panels, large paintings by elders who revealed many sacred designs for the first time.
